Though they’re used in the bath today, exposed thermostatic shower systems were originally designed for factories where precise temperatures were needed for certain manufacturing processes. Of course, these older models were not cloaked in beautiful nickel-plated covers or elegant engraving. Instead, the valves were marked with settings and the operating system was easily managed with gloved hands or even elbows.

The recent popularity of gray kitchens follows the trend for the color in general. From light to dark and cool to warm, gray is the new neutral.  It is an easy partner with many stone surface materials and is easily neutralized with white. This classic gray/white combination is uncomplicated, timeless, associated with elements in nature and not far from the fundamental simplicity of black and white.

I remember the first time we used dark grout as a design statement at Waterworks. Peter Sallick thought the columns in our 58th Street showroom should look like old New York, referencing the subways as an example. We loved the look; it emphasized the grid and gave the space dimension. It made the columns, which could easily have been a disaster, more integrated in to our design process as well as a focal part of the architecture.

The recent renovation of our Washington, DC showroom has given us multiple opportunities to think about the bath in new and sometimes bold ways. From using patterned cement tiles on the walls to the installation of decorative water jet-cut mosaics and highly varied 2cm mosaics, we like to inspire our clients to use materials, fittings and fixtures for their own projects in new and different ways.
