Only a dozen years ago, waterjet mosaics were the new shining star in the marketplace. Today they are simply everywhere, in countless patterns and colors. The technology behind them has advanced, too.  Initially, automotive factory machines were used to cut marble into shaped pieces. This has given way to special CNC computerized equipment, designed to cut stone into patterns that have been programmed into the cutting machine. That level of precision allows pieces to be assembled quickly.

If I were to identify a new trend, I would say that we are in a wallpaper moment. In shelter magazines and showrooms, textures and patterns for walls are everywhere. The only problem with all of these fresh choices is that there are so many wonderful new options, it is difficult to make a decision! Recently, I decided I wanted to wallpaper my laundry room and spent too much time taping potential choices to the walls; I considered everything from linen and grasscloth to stripes and subtle patterns. Unfortunately, I have yet to make a final decision.

For years I have been extolling the beauty of stone for the bath. It is a natural material that comes in a huge range of sizes and colors with multiple opportunities for different surface textures. It is durable, timeless, refined and only improves with age. Clearly, I love stone. Not only is it the perfect material for the bath, but it is perfect for the entry or foyer of the house.

Occasionally, I come across a vintage bath that is so compelling I like to post a single image. In this bath for Barbara Hutton, I loved the choice of book matched marble with just the right amount of activity on the surface, the contrasting color scheme, the classical ornamentation on the soffit over the tub and the brass tub fittings. Great design choices never go out of style.
