I simply love stone. From counters in the kitchen to fireplaces in the living room, stone is the perfect material for nearly every room of the house. Its beauty lies in its variation and imperfections, its organic range of shades and tones and its environmental qualities. It is available in countless modules from 1″squares to large 4′ x 7′ slabs. It can have straight or ‘antiqued’ chiseled edges and textured surfaces. It is durable, versatile and easy to maintain. Like a chameleon it can blend in with its surroundings; it can be sleek and modern or rustic and traditional. And, while this post extols its praises for all manner of residential installations, you will find stone in airports, hotels and commercial spaces.

It is spring, at last. The season always inspires me to check my medicine cabinet and towel storage for all the detritus that has accumulated since my last overhaul.

It seems that we see more traditional baths published than modern ones.  I was very pleased to see an example of the Waterworks modern .25 tub in AtHome magazine recently. This particular house has traditional elements, but the tub seems right at home.  The right choice of materials, artfully layered, as well as beautiful textures and art make this a cohesive design.

I have been searching for a large mirror for my sitting/dressing room for too long. I decided it needed to have a gold leaf frame with a lovely worn finish, perhaps a little decoration and, of course, I needed a specific size. I imagined I would easily find it in one of the “antiques” centers I visit regularly. Alas, nothing with the right finish or size has yet to catch my eye or suit my pocketbook. So it was on to the web. I love the Dering Hall site and decided to shop there. I’m having a great time exploring the mirrors they offer.
