New York City designer Philip Gorrivan was kind enough to share this photo with me.  It is a bath he designed for a NYC client who wanted a classic and timeless space that was practical as well as beautiful. He chose to install two single washstands with marble slabs fabricated with traditional ogee edges. The functionality becomes apparent with the installation of a small piece of furniture with a bank of drawers providing extra space to store bath sundries out of sight. I love all of the black accents from the border on the towels to the black crown molding. The scale is right and the materials beautifully layered.

I was attracted to this image for several reasons.  I am a proponent of a small collection to personalize any space but especially the bath. A great way to make small and seemingly insignificant objects seem important is to corral them all together on a tray.  The lovely Elsa Peretti silver bean, an ivory container with a silver overlay monogram, several small silver boxes and a clock make this a delightful arrangement and one that can be altered easily as the collection expands. It probably would not be hard to find similar objects in your home and create your own tableau.

This is a wonderful room for many reasons, but I have focused specifically on the fireplace. Rarely do I see a fireplace using directional stone and one that is so bold. The gray and white marble, called Zephyr, is quarried in Turkey. Rather than just face the firebox with a ubiquitous stone, this installation shows how slabs have been layered for a simple but architectural installation. The fireplace, along with the modern furniture, choice of paint and objects makes this focal point of the space well integrated into a holistic design.

The Empire tub is the focal point in this space. It reads as a piece of sculpture, filling the window bay.  It is framed by the soft and simple curtains;  the visual height of the ceiling is captured by the tall spare tree and the nearly transparent chandelier.  There is no question that the space is enlivened by the patterned red rug. The rug is a bold statement with traditional overtones. It feels like just the right amount of decoration.
