I realize that is it not completely fair to judge a restaurant on the design and decoration of its’ bathroom.  However, I think there is some correlation between the the restroom, its cleanliness, the hand towels or dryers, the fragrance of the soap, the functionality of the fittings, the overall design and decoration of the space and the quality of the food and service. In other words, the lack of interest in the appearance of the WC indicates to me that there are other corners that might be cut in the kitchen.

I haven’t written about public bathrooms in a long time, probably because most of them are abominable. But on my recent trip to Europe I saw several WC’s that merited photos.  Here are a few things that make a public bathroom worthy of this blog; of course, they must be sparkling clean, there must be a relationship between the design of the bath and its’ adjacent space (the lobby or restaurant), the fixtures should be in perfect working order and the lighting good for a makeup refresh. It is always nice if there are fresh flowers or a fragrant candle and, it goes without saying, the space needs to be visually pleasing.

At one time or another all of us have been in a public bathroom, whether it was in a restaurant, hotel lobby, airport or museum.  I think we’re all relieved if they are clean and have toilet paper, even more so if they have hot water, hand wash and paper towels.  Their design and decoration is often secondary.  However recently I’ve begun to notice a shift in public bathroom design.

Fall is a great time for the release of new books, and this has been a banner year. Here are three that have landed on my desk recently, with more to come later.
