The design brief for Waterworks Studio was to embrace an elegant and straightforward sensibility in fittings, textiles, accessories and surfaces with deliberately edited and curated styles, colors and finishes. We wanted to make it easy to assemble a bath confidently by removing guesswork and stressful decision making from the process. The result is a stylish collection that works efficiently and beautifully–outfitting  multiple bathrooms from modern to traditional.

The Saarinen House

A number of years ago I was fortunate enough to take a tour of the Saarinen House at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. It was one of those extraordinary experiences in visual imagery that, even to this day, continues to factor into my design thinking. Actually, I wanted to move in to the house so that I could study the countless rich details, the palette, materials and texture of the house Saarinen built for himself and his family on the campus of Cranbrook. It is quite possibly one of the most significant houses built during the 1920s.

Black & White

In fashion or home, black and white is timeless.

I have written about black and white bathrooms before. But as I continue to see more well designed baths using this restrained formula, I decided to revisit the topic. A black and white color scheme has the potential of creating a minimalist or stark interior. A myopic view could see this scheme to as too contemporary or limiting.  I like to think of black and white as refined and restrained, orderly and liberating. The decisions made when creating a black and white bath are very deliberate.  The varying shades of both colors help create a timeless space but too much of either color will create an unbalanced room. This clean aesthetic demands the uncluttering of counters and a general tidy approach (although I believe that all baths should be neat for the best functionality).

Ceramic Tile

It seems as if we are in a stone moment. Our overwhelming enthusiasm for stone should not eclipse ceramic tile as a fabulous material for backsplashes, fireplaces, kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudrooms. It is extraordinarily versatile, with unique palettes, easy maintenance  and architecturally as well as structurally interesting. Personally, I think there is nothing more beautiful than a wall of handmade tile. There are nuances of glaze variation, surface irregularities and artistic expression in each tile.
