I simply love stone. From counters in the kitchen to fireplaces in the living room, stone is the perfect material for nearly every room of the house. Its beauty lies in its variation and imperfections, its organic range of shades and tones and its environmental qualities. It is available in countless modules from 1″squares to large 4′ x 7′ slabs. It can have straight or ‘antiqued’ chiseled edges and textured surfaces. It is durable, versatile and easy to maintain. Like a chameleon it can blend in with its surroundings; it can be sleek and modern or rustic and traditional. And, while this post extols its praises for all manner of residential installations, you will find stone in airports, hotels and commercial spaces.

The only word I can think of to describe this delightful interpretation of a sink skirt is “confection”. It is both a fanciful and imaginative way to cover the bottom of a marble slab, create some invisible storage and make a design statement. The skirt follows the shape of the top, a lovely detail, and the lace is an inspired choice as a material in this setting. While the marble feels solid and heavy, the lace is ethereal and would blow in a breeze.

We were cruising down Route #1 in Maine when I spotted a sign that said Swans Island. I have been a fan of Swans Island blankets since I first experienced them at the Nicky-Kehoe shop in LA several years ago. Could it be that I had serendipitously found the place where they are made, right on the highway in mid-coast Maine?

Layering textures and materials is one of the most important ingredients in creating a bath that is both serene and sensuous. This bath, with its sculptural burnished tub sitting next to wood furniture, is refined, rich and timeless. The mosaic floor adds texture and a hint of color simply because of the variation inherent in the stone. The wainscot slab material has elegant, whispy veins while the paint color is gentle and brings the room together.
