This week on my trip to Atlanta I met designer Smith Hanes.  He is the talent behind Atlanta’s hottest restaurant, OPTIMIST. The space is fabulous; open, modern, relaxed with an industrial and vintage twist. High ceilings, warm wood, linen curtains and layered textures make this grand space warm and friendly. In addition, Smith has created a divine bar where hanging out with friends, eating oysters and having a drink is a wonderful experience.

It is so exciting to discover a shop that is both original and inspiring. MARCH located on Sacramento Street in San Francisco is just such a place. MARCH is the brain-child of Sam Hamilton, a graduate of the Ralph Lauren enterprise. It has been my must-see shop in SF for several years.  In its’ first incarnation, MARCH sold European antiques and contemporary furniture; but not just any furniture. There was always something special about the pieces whether it was the finish, the scale or or the uniqueness of the design.

The exhibition Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen at the Museum of Modern Art explores the 20th century transformation of the kitchen as a pivotal point of modern thinking in family life. After WW1, kitchens long ignored by design professionals began to attract attention from domestic reformers and progressive architects. They wanted to transform the kitchen from drab, inefficient and unsanitary to something newer and family friendly. Previously the kitchen was relegated to the basement or an annex; it’s new popularity called for the reorganization of house design and a new definition of women and their place in family life.
