The New Bespoke is the compelling monograph featuring the work of  Boston interior designer Frank Roop. An earlier career in specialty menswear at the eponymous shop Louis Boston formed his unique and unexpected concepts for designing a space. Murray Pearlstein, founder of Louis Boston, was both a tutor and mentor. Pearlstein had a high regard for classics with an open mind about new trends that kept him hip and cool into his 70s. His extraordinary taste, style, sophistication and elegance clearly informed Frank’s design perspective.

I recently went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to revisit the Islamic Wing now called Art of the Arab Lands. I am always inspired by color, texture and pattern and what better place to find it than in the magnificent woven textiles, painted pottery, wood carvings and hammered metal from the various Islamic dynasties and empires. The collections range in chronology from the 7th century Damascus and Baghdad to Moorish Spain, the Ottoman Empire and 16th century South Asia. It could easily take days or weeks to study the collections and my few pictures are merely meant to whet your appetite to have a look for yourself.

The new or renovated all-white kitchen has become ubiquitous! I was recently on the jury for New York Cottages and Gardens design awards. It was difficult to find the definitive winner in the kitchen category. They were all well designed, functional and attractive. But, it was hard to distinguish one from the other with their Carrara marble counters and matching backsplashes. With that in mind, I went looking for examples of kitchens where dark cabinetry, tiles, counters, walls or floors added a bit of drama.

The color of the year, according to pantone, is emerald green. Personally, I am not a great fan of green unless it has lots of gray in it making the tones drab. I have painted the bottom of my kitchen cabinets Farrow and Ball Mouse’s Back, a mysterious gray/green, and occasionally wear an olive green sweater. That is about as far as my green vocabulary goes.
